Linux superiore anche al bios

Una nuova scheda video

Ormai da tempo, sia per avere sicura compatibilità con Linux, sia perché comunque mi è sempre bastata, uso sistemi con scheda video Intel integrata.

Visto però, che l’ occasione fa l’uomo ladro, ho risposto ad un annuncio per una VTX Radeon Hd 7870 X-edition. Molto meglio di qualsiasi cosa abbia mai avuto: 2GB di ram DDR5, PCI Express 3.0, HDMI 1.4. Il tutto per solo 60 (poi vabbè, sapete già che ho trovato 1000 persone [DOPO] che me la facevano avere a meno etc. etc.).

Il problema

Senonché, non funzionava, ahimè. Proprio nessun segno di vita. Che rabbia! Non mi era mai capitato di prendere bidoni dagli annunci. Comunque il venditore, squisito, era così sicuro del perfetto funzionamento della scheda che si era detto disposto a rendermi i soldi.

Dove cercare la soluzione?

Nell’alimentatore! Sicuramente la prima cosa da curare in caso di schede video prestanti è di assicurarsi che il sistema disponga di adeguata erogazione. Nel caso specifico la scheda presenta un attacco a 6 pin per essere alimentata, che io non avevo collegato perché il mio alimentatore (un modello base incorporato nel case) non ne dispone e anche perché mi era stato assicurato da molti che non ve ne fosse bisogno solo per verificarne il funzionamento. Anche il precedente proprietario della scheda sosteneva di non aver mai collegato il 6 pin per farlo funzionare.

La prima prova è stata con un adattatore da 2 molex a 6 pin, il risultato è stato che finalmente si avviava! Si, però solo la ventola… Ora, all’avvio, schermo nero e 4 beep, che nel bios della mia scheda madre (AsRock B85M Pro4) indicano errore della scheda video. La strada era giusta? Ero un po’ sconfortato…

Preso il coraggio a due mani, vinto l’orgoglio di farsi aiutare, decisi di portare la scheda in un negozio fisico: l’ottimo Tekshop di Castelbolognese. Subito mi viene confermato che senza collegarla al 6 pin, la scheda non avrebbe mai funzionato. E che la scheda funziona, perché provata in una loro macchina. (Veramente ottimo servizio, considerando che non l’ho comprata lì.)

La decisione quindi è stata di acquistare un alimentatore adeguato, nello specifico un

 Cooler Master RS500-ACABB1-BULK ATX APFC 38A 80+ 

(pagato fra l’altro 2 euro meno che Amazon) e di alimentare a profusione la scheda.

Anche se non fosse servito, pensai, l’alimentatore è sempre un componente fondamentale di un buon sistema e poi finalmente avrei potuto eliminare tutti quegli adattatori SATA che stavo usando per alimentare gli Hard Disk. Qui infatti ve ne sono in abbondanza! Inoltre anche nel caso di nuova scheda mi sarebbe servito.

Purtroppo però l’alimentatore non era la soluzione! La situazione rimaneva invariata, senonché, una svolta: lasciando acceso il sistema, Arch si caricava e funzionava perfettamente, riconoscendo la scheda

Il dilemma

Ora però, rimaneva il problema di non visualizzare la schermata di post, ma di ritrovarsi direttamente al login.

Io no, e ho continuato ad indagare. La soluzione, come sempre, da Google. In un forum di utenti AsRock si parlava di problemi di riconoscimento della scheda da parte del bios. Ho quindi provveduto ad aggiornarlo, ora è facile ,lo si fa tramite internet in pochi minuti. Ancora niente POST, però e ancora quei fastidiosissimi beep.

La soluzione

Un parametro del bios andava settato: si tratta de “PCI1e link speed” nel mio caso lo si poteva settare o su GEN1 oppure su GEN2, ma non su Auto o GEN3.

La soluzione teoricamente non è ideale, perché si crea un collo di bottiglia, ma considerando che comunque la GPU è overclokkata e che io non faccio gaming estremo, ho preferito il quieto vivere.

Nel frattempo, direttamente da Bios, avevo aperto un ticket ad AsRock che mi ha risposto:

1. Please load the BIOS to default setting.
2. Re-install the VGA card on the PCIE slot.
3. Re-install the CPU because the memory controller is build in CPU.

on the other hand, B85M Pro4 supports Microsoft® Windows® 10 64-bit / 8.1 32-bit / 8.1 64-bit / 8 32-bit / 8 64-bit / 7 32-bit / 7 64-bit.
We would suggest user to install the OS which B85M Pro4 is supported.

Io di queste cose ho fatto solo di ripristinare i parametri di default e di togliere e rimettere la scheda. Interessante comunque l’indicazione di togliere la cpu. e anche il fatto che abbiano risposto nonostante la scheda non sia più in produzione.

Anche stavolta ho comunque risolto e ho scritto volentieri la soluzione anche per voi lettori nel caso vi capitasse un problema simile.
